Six Powerful Questions to Drive Strategic Discussion with Your Board
#1 “If we couldn’t do it this way, how else might we do it?”
When you think you have got it right, you ignore other possibilities and stop looking for new opportunities that will arise. Before going all in on a decision or strategy, a great question to break out of this paradigm is “If we couldn’t do it this way, how else might we do it?”
#2 “What are we missing?”
This question is best asked after a robust discussion where a preferred option has been agreed upon by the group. Ask individuals to pause for a few moments - 5 minutes for example - and consider if anything has been missed.
#3 “How does this help deliver against our vision, and how can we align it more closely?”
Your organisations vision statement is one of the most powerful strategic filters that your Board possesses. This question allows wide ranging discussion at the same time as focusing people on what really matters
#4 “What questions should we be asking?”
This question encourages participants to refocus the discussion when it feels unclear or distracted. It invites the group to identify key questions that will provide clarity, guiding the conversation toward more strategic and actionable insights.
#5 “What assumptions are we making?”
This question prompts the group to examine the underlying assumptions guiding decisions. By challenging these assumptions, the team can uncover potential blind spots and ensure that decisions are based on facts, not unverified beliefs or outdated information.
#6“What are the Yes But’s …?”
This question is a powerful way to encourage those who may be hesitant to speak up, especially in a room where everyone seems to be in agreement. It invites alternative viewpoints by addressing the common objections that may be quietly simmering beneath the surface.
